Mini Face Jug Pottery Workshop at the Museum

Make your own miniature pottery face jug at our September 26 workshop! Join us at the museum for a guided workshop to create your own pottery piece.
Your choice of scale! Our project is a roughly 1”, ½” or ¼” scale pottery piece. You can make as many pots as you like with 1 pound of clay provided.
We want everyone to personalize their project so if desired bring any object that you want to use to make an impression in the clay (we will also provide some of these).
The pottery will be fired at the instructor’s studio and the process will take 1 to 2 weeks to complete. Participants who cannot pick up their jugs in person will be responsible for postage costs.

Cost is $35 for museum members or $40 for non-members. Includes museum admission and ALL materials needed for this project.
Your instructor Rita Bullin has been molding clay for 15 years. As she explains it, “”mud really got into my heart.” She began working for herself full-time this year.
Pottery face jugs originated in the mid-19th century in the Edgefield District of South Carolina. Typically crafted by enslaved African Americans, these just did not necessarily serve as utilitarian vessels but rather were considered highly personal items. They remain exceptionally popular craft projects and art pieces today!
